of radio stars, unfortunate plants and a trip to the zoo

of radio stars...

  • when my ipod ran out of power two days ago, i started tuning again into my cellphone's FM Radio. i forgot about radios since i discovered Napster and MP3s several years ago. but desperate times call for desperate measures. it's really hard to imagine my mornings and my daily commute without music or something to listen to. it's essential to me. just like my 3-in-1 coffee.
  • what i listen to on my radio is Chico and Dela Mar's Morning Rush. it's been on the airwaves since i can remember and it's not hard to see why. it's really an entertaining show. those guys are so funny and candid and they have quite a chemistry. when im on the jeep or walking in the Guadalupe market, i find it hard to keep myself from laughing as i listen to those guys talk or react about their topic of the day which can be anything from spooky to kinky to almost relevant to absolutely irrelevant. whatever it is, they can slice it up or spice it up in a way that you keep tuned in and engaged until you reach your destination.
  • the last time i listened to a daily countdown on the radio, "November Rain" by guns n' roses was number one. guess what year was that, haha! it was summer vacation and i would tune in to Campus Radio as I help out with the sari-sari store my lola owns. im the tindera from 11am to 1pm. this was a routine for me for almost the entire summer. i must have thought the Triggerman was cool back then.
  • early this evening, i was at the SMART Wireless Center, trying to have my phone re-activated. neglected to pay my bills again this month. as i wait for my turn, a guy in green shirt and baseball cap approached the security guard and asked the guard a question. he said thanks and then walked away. it was Mo Twister. my students always listen to his radio show. i haven't heard it, but im interested.

of unfortunate plants...

  • just when i thought i had green thumb just like my dad, one of my indoor plant started to die. it happened when i stayed at my lola's for the weekend. i watered it and for days observed if the leaves will turn green again. they didn't. so i decided it's too much work and probably hopeless then placed the plant near the window, behind the curtains. im hiding a dying plant behind my curtains -- i've become a plant murderer and the once fortune plant is now an unfortunate plant! how sad!
  • the other plant was doing a little better. it's growing new leaves even, but i have discovered that black ants have decided to grow a colony within its soil. hay! ants in the plant! i called my mom and asked her what to do... she said to keep the soil dry because ants prefer the soil moist... but wouldn't that kill the plant eventually? my best friend suggested to give up the plant and place it outside instead, together with the other garden plants in the compound. maybe this is what i should have also done with the now unfortunate plant instead of hiding it behind the curtains...

of trip to the zoo...

  • last Sunday, I went with my friends to the Avilon zoo in Rizal. really huge zoo and quite decent. almost comparable to this public zoo in chicago. they have a large collection of birds and interesting collection of turtles, scorpions and tarantulas. they have happy ostriches, colorful peacocks, llamas, cougars, dignified tigers, lovely parrots, pythons, sleepy lions, owls, hiyenas, monkeys... so many and so diverse! my favorite was not the turtles but their flock of sheep. it felt amazing to watch them do... well, nothing. my guy friend said it was sort of relaxing. in my mind, i was imagining that i was a shepherd in the Biblical times kind of way -- ancient, hehe! anyway, i hope you can visit the Avilon zoo sometime this summer. there are no elephants nor giraffes which i was hoping i'd see, but i assure you there are many other species which you'll enjoy discovering or learning more about.
